We at CFSB cannot stress enough the importance of understanding the dangers of gluten in the diet. Both Ruth and I have previously posted on gluten and this I guarantee today’s post will not be the last one!
Scientific American (Aug 2009) had an interesting article by Alessio Fasano (professor and director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine) on celiac disease and gave many insights into the affects of gluten on our bodies. (Yes, gluten is bad enough to cause a major medical university to create a research center!)
Gluten “triggers an autoimmune reaction (against the body’s own tissues)”…, “which harms the intestinal lining and impairs the body’s absorption of nutrients. Chronic exposure to those foods [containing gluten] can also lead to cancer and other ill effects.”
“Our gastrointestinal system usually breaks down most ingested proteins into standard amino acids – the building blocks from which all proteins are constructed. Gluten, however, has a peculiar structure…which renders part of the molecule impervious to our protein chopping machinery, leaving small protein fragments intact.”
These protein fragments cause the body to release “chemicals that stimulate immune activity… Such immune defenses harm the intestinal cells responsible for absorbing nutrients.”
The good news: “removing gluten from the diet ends up healing the intestinal damage”. Make the change to a paleo diet now. Gluten makes us sick and you have the power to heal yourself.

hey, simon and scott, why don’t you guys get off the roids, stop being meatheads and do some sort of metcon-off.
and yet so modest! Oh wait…
BTW you forgot to put your SP/PP/PJ numbers Simon
It’s because they’re still only one evolutionary step away from 24 Hr Fitness bench press kings taking carbo fuel to “load up”.
Now to his credit, Simon did offer for the trainers to come up with a WOD for the two of them but Scott wants to stick with the CFT. I think they’re afraid of fun stuff like wallball and walking lunges.

I’m just high on the CF Ride!! Last weekend I was playing volleyball and I blocked a good player on consecutive shots!! Everyone around the court was shocked. How the hell was I getting over the net for a block!! Nay, consecutive blocks!! WTF!!
As for the challenge, let’s take care of the first bet…..CFT, loser wears a “bitch” t-shirt for a week. Then I’m game for custom WOD challenges, Girl WOD challenges, etc. I need to shed some more fat around my midsection and nail the first pullup of my life before I can really start competing in the Girl WODs.
PS, Matt, if you want the name of our dealer, give me a call (555-1212).
PPS, What’s a metcon?
I am taking speal’s advice on roids…
