The Language of CrossFit

by Al Benchmark Workout, Workout of the Day on July 7th, 2009 No Comments

The other day I was in class talking to a classmate about a physical abilities test and he compared it to a scaled down “Fran.” Immediately, another classmate within earshot (also a CrossFitter)  perked up with interest upon hearing that term to describe the workout. A special language had been spoken and we were the only ones in the room who knew what that meant. As you get further into your CrossFit training, new terminology begins to creep into your vernacular. Sometimes that vocubulary can get tricky when discussing a snatch or thruster in mixed company. Awkwardly funny moments are often the result. Have you ever had any similar experiences when discussing CrossFit to others outside of the gym?

Lisbeth Darsh, of CrossFit Watertown and the woman who makes the CrossFit Affiliate blog such an awesome resource for us all, recently shared some similar sentiments when describing the upcoming CrossFit Games. Which also leads me to  an important reminder that the gym will be closed both Friday and Saturday. Many of us will be traveling up to Aromas, CA to witness incredible athletes from all across the globe compete for the title of “Fittest Man and Woman on Earth.”

on off days at crossfit santa clara, khalipa will make up a WOD (they follow crossfit HQ schedule). we did this one last thursday and i liked it a lot so i figured i’d share with the group….

3 rounds of AMRAP 5minutes with 2 minute rest between rounds

7 overhead squats (95# for dudes)
    7 burpees

    my sets for the 3 rounds were 4 – 4 – 4
i really dug this WOD. the AMRAP factor with overhead squats encourages you to keep that weight up there for as many reps as possible. putting it down only to get back into an overhead squat sucks.

  7. Danny says:

another really good one, which we did yesterday (main site WOD)

    21 – 18 – 15 – 12 – 9 – 6 – 3

    front squat 185#
    GHD sit-ups

khalipa encouraged us to pick a weight that we could only do a max of 8 to 10 reps. this really makes the WOD interesting and probably holds true to HQ’s philosophy because 185 is pretty heavy for most.

  8. Ruth says:

Danny, love the WODs, especially the interval one. Keep em coming! You going to make it over to the Games?
