Previously I had read the following statement by Loren Cordain about modern fruits:
…the common fruits we eat today bear little resemblance to their wild ancestors. Domesticated fruits are almost always larger, sweeter, and contain less fiber than their wild counterparts. Compare a Golden Delicious apple to a crab apple and you begin to get the picture.
So on my recent trip to my family’s cabin in a remote part of Michigan, I went on a hike and came across the wild apples pictured. The lowest hanging fruits had been eaten by deer, but as you can see there were still plenty in the higher limbs. I took a couple with me and ate them later. While they were not bad, they were definitely more tart than even the strongest Granny Smith apple and a far cry from the mammoth red delicious you find at your local supermarket.
If you’re curious to know what they would be like, look no further than the Whole Foods in El Segundo. A couple weeks ago I noticed they had a stand advertising “heirloom apples” from a local orchard here in California. They have a few different varieties, but the two I’ve tried were remarkably similar to those I found in the wild.

Thanks for the post Forrest…I love how you combine your humor with good ole CF facts:)
Psst… Nicole, I think you commented on the wrong post. Forrest didn’t write this one and not much humor either!
Oh excuse me Marcus, I though it was a free for all:) Psst…you humor me all the time with your great post as well!
Miss you guys! Finally got a moment in my hectic schedule to find Salt Lake City CF. Didn’t really get to WOD but just got a row in and worked on my snatches and 5 rounds of Cindy.
2min of WB…ugh!!!
BTW, Nicole it’s not nice to lie to Marcus ;o)
Somebody better comment on how awesome my first class was today. If not, the next class I teach will have bottom to bottom tabata squats and Fran. Let the comments begin.
Forrest, dude, your class was awesome even though I wasn’t there!
I was having a hard time finding the words to express how awesome this morning’s class was, so taking a cue from Forrest, I thought I’d write a Haiku about it.
Forrest is awesome
Especially when he trains
On a cool morning
