Before I joined CrossFit South Bay, I started doing CrossFit in a park with a couple of friends or at 24 Hour Fitness. It was fun and different, but it lacked a little something. No one was holding us accountable and we didn’t track any of our progress. When we worked out at 24 Hour Fitness, we always had to modify our workouts because someone ended up taking one of our benches or bars. It was also hard to stay motivated through the entire workout when people look at you like you’re murdering kittens when in actuality you are just doing kipping pull-ups. The intensity would drop three notches when I would struggle to get in my 8th round of tabata push-ups and the guy in the Ed Hardy hat on the calf raise machine next to me is talking on his cell phone about getting wasted at Sharkeez the night before. My squats would suffer by not going below parallel because the guy next to me was loading up 500 lbs and going the depth of a push press and calling it a squat. People in the gym didn’t care about fitness. It was contagious. I wish I was a bigger person and could say that all those bad habits didn’t affect me. I wish I didn’t do back and bis on Tuesday. I wish I knew better than to use the tricep pull-down. I wish I didn’t hate everyone in the gym just for being there, but the mediocrity was contagious.
In the same way mediocrity is contagious, so is greatness. In the past few months, I have witnessed each of you excel past things you never thought you would accomplish. I’ve seen all of you encourage and motivate one another through grueling workouts. Nothing makes me happier than to hear “C’mon UP! UP!” when someone is inching their way to a PR on one of the Olympic lifts. Or when someone gets a double under or kipping pull-up for the first time and gets that surprised smile/scream like when you first learned how to ride a bike by yourself. Or to see you help a fellow athlete run their last 400M run by running with them and motivating them to push hard and keep running.
We all owe one another for our accomplishments in the gym. There are some days I remember that I couldn’t have gotten through a workout if it wasn’t for you all encouraging me to keep going. I remember one WOD where I could see Greg to my left and Lil’ Ryan to my right and Big Ryan directly in front of me. They didn’t say anything, but it was like we were all playing CrossFit chicken to see who was going to rest first. That alone motivated me to keep going. The effort was contagious.
Each day you come in the gym, try and give as much effort as you can and I guarantee you will PR and start seeing your fellow athletes follow suit.

forrest thanks again for the great wod on sunday! my abs are killing me. great post!
I am hurting just looking at the filthy fifty. Damn.
This WOD was created by Satan himself.
God help us all.
I’m scared!
No problem Lindsay! I hope you guys had a great time. It was great having you guys there for my first workout back. My legs are SO sore!
I personally LOVE the weekly rants about 24 hr fitness…probably because I agree 100%…kinda nervous about this filthy fifty business!!
Forrest that was a very inspirational post!!!
F ME!!! Mariesa where are the middle finger targets??? HA…Scarlett, you crack me up!
Sounds like we have a lot of filthy fifty first timers. This is one of those workouts that no matter how many times you do it, it still is scary, but after it’s done, it’s not so bad…until the next time.
Great post Forrest. Back and bis on Tuesday, chest and tris on Monday and Thursday, legs on Friday; that was the formula for getting fit at Gold’s. Plus “cardio” whenever you could get it in.
This guy has a sub 2 minute fran.

Slaughter that dog is freaking creepy. How the hell would you ever get a dog that big!
Officially the first workout that truly made me feel like crying, puking, passing out, and slapping someone all at the same time. And I kinda loved it…
That dog is going to give me nightmares. thank you very much!
If I had to come back as a dog, I’d want to be that one.
Filthy Fifty shining moments for me were the burpees. Not that they were that great or nice to watch, but I did a whole lot less resting and fish flopping than usual. I hate you, burpee.
Six mos ago Rx 31:45
Today Rx 22:47
Oh yeah, and DL 3×3 155# / Windmill 12kg 3×10
A lot of PR’s today on the Filthy. Wow Remy a 9-minute PR is pretty darn good. You had time to fit in Fran for good measure. Also, nice gravatar. Greg is still PRing as well. He might have to hit a point where he doesn’t get any faster.
Great job to the On-Rampers tonight as well. You’re almost done!
Filthy 50 is such a bitch, but as many times as I didn’t think I could get through it–I DID! Woo Hoo!!!Thank god for Box Jumps and Double Unders.
23:01-Damn you Remy, 15 seconds!! But I love how you push me!! Without you I would have never done 1Pood KB Swings. That shit is heavy!
