Pain

An ancient Japanese proverb goes something like this: “Sometimes we must look through a lens of pain to be able to see clearly.”

Pain extends its touch to many facets of conscious thought and biochemical signaling. Once was the agony of discomfort feared, for at one time my ability to cope was incommensurate to it’s ability to consume. Living however is not so different a paradox to the observed natural way of all things. A black and white, rain and fire, health and disease, misery and glory, a yin and yang. Without the knowledge of death, is life so cherished; without the sorrow of heartbreak is true love embraced; without defeat in failure is success as sweet? Does a good man exist if there is no antagonist to set the oppositional example. Is it so odd then, that life seems fuller, more fruitful, and flourishing when pain is experienced more frequently. Pain can be defined simply as a sensory perception felt by an electrical signal sent through a conduit of biochemical conductors. Though without it, humanity is lost, for it is directly related to all things which truly make us humane.

I will endure through the pain. Those who choose to endure it with me are my allies. We stand in wait, and will not be held down.

“A man of pleasure is a man of pains” – Edward Young

“It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience” – Julius Caesar

“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment” – Jim Rohn

“Nothing begins, and nothing ends, that is not paid with moan; For we are born in others pain and perish in our own” – Francis Thompson

“Given the choice between the experience of pain and nothing, I would choose pain” -William Faulkner

“Many of us spend our whole lives running from feeling with the mistaken belief that you cannot bear the pain. But you have already borne the pain. What you have not done is feel all you are beyond the pain.” – Saint Bartholomew

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain” – Carl Jung

“Pain is no longer pain when it is past” – Margaret J. Preston

“Pain is weakness leaving the body.” – Daniel R. Evans

“Wisdom is nothing more than healed pain.” – Robert Gary Lee

    Dear Forrest,
I’m gonna kick your ass for the 30 calories rowed = 30 double unders substitution for me on this WOD. As I lay dying after the WOD you said, “Um…maybe 15 calories would have been a more accurate substitution….sorry!”

    Very well-said, Slaughter.

I’m not sure to whom to attribute this, but I’ve always liked: Nothing worth doing is easy.
Teddy Roosevelt version: “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led diffcult lives and led them well.”
