Hubby and I celebrated Valentine’s Day on Saturday night instead of fighting the crowds on Sunday. Now I deem VD (Valentine’s Day not that burning sensation during urination) a perfect day for a cheat meal, so the plan was sushi and flourless chocolate cake. Sounds benign enough, don’t you think? I really try to steer clear of gluten even during cheats. Pregnancy will not allow me to eat sashimi – no raw protein on my plate. I need sympathy for this as sashimi is one of my most favoritest things. I stuck to the cooked stuff, but allowed myself to indulge in the rice. So tasty! We had a wonderful dinner and headed home to exchange gifts and eat cake. Yes, we exchanged gifts. Many of you think that VD is totally lame for one reason or another, but this is our first. We are married and pregnant and celebrating our first VD together. How sweet! How hilarious! I digress…oh, the thoughtfulness and the romance! The cake was absolutely amazing…you can get it at Whole Foods [chocolate (chocolate liquor, sugar, vanilla), heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla – definitely not paleo). We played Boggle because we are geeks; then I started crashing from all the carbs. Bedtime.
I woke up at 3am restless and feeling crappy. Finally went back to sleep an hour later and awoke at 8am: no energy, headache, exhausted. I am out of my first trimester and have been feeling pretty good, so I really can’t blame my little growing tadpole. Apparently, between the rice, sugar and other general abnormals (soy sauce, eel sauce, etc); I was hungover. Determined to get a workout in, I met some friends at the gym and pushed through a WOD. Holy crap, its 5:30 pm and I still feel like yuck. Food hangovers suck worse than alcohol hangovers. Oh, that’s another thing – I didn’t even get to enjoy a good buzz. No Sapporo, no sake, no sake bombs. This damn thing has lasted all day! Lesson learned.
Post confessions of food hangovers to comments.

FRAN DAY!!!! Lets kill this today and everyone get some awesome PR’s. 3-2-1 GO!!!!!
Mariessa, congrats on your first Vday with your hubby! Yesterday was cheat day… home made dark chocolate covered strawberries & pizza. Delicious during consumption, then 20 minutes after I was flaked out mildly unconscious on couch watching USA dominate. I felt like poo & lacked energy (regardless of how much sugar was consumed). This morning, well, had I known it was Fran I might have not cheated. As for paleo, cheating is becoming less and less enticing.
My first time doing Fran- she is harder than she looks.
Chip it was good to see your face at the butt crack of dawn! Hopefully work lets up in the near future and we will get to see more of you at the gym.
Good luck with Fran everyone!
You are SO right Mariessa. Food hangovers are way worse than alcohol. I ate cupcakes Friday night, and I had a huge headache all day Saturday. Honestly, the only time my head felt ok was when the rest of my body felt like shutting down — during Saturday morning’s team WOD. I had to take a nap so it would go away. Plus, now my body has started sounding it’s own cheat alarm. Eating Paleo and taking lots of fish oil made my skin clear and glowy. But whenever I eat sugar, I get a pimple the next day.
Congrats to everyone on their big PRs today!
Mariessa, you two are too cute
After running into you at WF, we half-heartedly looked for the goat’s milk ice cream cheat and gave up after a pass through the ice cream section (couldn’t find it!).
I’m thrilled to hear how many people are adopting paleo that aren’t even in the challenge, too. And it’s great to hear how people are feeling the changes, how sugar is becoming less enticing, and how you’re discovering the staples: quality meats, leafy greens, nuts, fish oil, Farmer’s markets, Sprouts grocery store, 8-hours+ of sleep… the good life

Mariesa, so good to have some girl time:)
I hate to admit this, but here goes-It was my good friend’s bday Friday and his choice of dinner was Mexican food, which I haven’t touched for who knows when–could be as long as 2 months or so. While drinking margaritas and celebrating with 20 close friends Paleo was slipping out of my fingers. The decision to take the plunge into food coma hell was a good idea for the moment, but like everyone else knows so well, the next day was like someone was inside punching my stomach. To reiterate what Allyson said, paleo cheating is really not what it is cracked up to be:)
I’m sure your little tadpole wasn’t happy either
Don’t eat oranges, my mom swears they made me such a hyperactive kid, unless you want a super hyper kid, with the attention span of a gnat then eat them galore!!! At least he/she will have lots of energy for CF!
Mariessa, Congrats on the marriage and pregnancy. It has been a long time. I had Samantha in April and I can’t believe she is gonna be 10 months tomorrow. Let me know if you have any questions about training and pregnancy. I did crossfit up until the last month or so, I was just sooo tired all the time. We have to get together soon. I want to see your baby bump..ha
