Throughout high school I was a track and cross-country athlete, during this time I had the opportunity to be trained by some very impressive coaches. One element I particularly enjoyed about our cross country team was the family element that our coaches engrained into our training program. Right before our season started, our coach would rent out a few cabins in Mammoth and invite everyone up to get in a week of high altitude training and fun. Our days were filled with grueling workouts 3 to 4 times a day. But aside from that, regardless of how F’ed up the day was because of the obscene amount of running we did, everyone still had a damn good time. Looking back and comparing those days to where I am now, I see a lot of similarities. Our gym is packed from of great athletes, but what makes us different then other facilities is our family atmosphere!
This led me to say to myself, “Self, why can’t CrossFit South Bay do something like that”?
Before I went too far into the planning process, I brought it up to my wife to see what she thought (because for those of you who are married, you know wives are always right). Secondly, I brought it up to a few people around the gym to see if they thought I was crazy. Everyone agreed that I generally exude crazy, regardless of that fact everyone I talk with seemed to think it was an okay idea!
Now, I am bringing it up to everyone wanted to see what everyone’s thoughts were on a weekend escape up to big bear. The days would be a mix of fun in the sun, WOD’s (we would bring gear fro this), hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming, educational sessions, you name it.
Here are the details on one place I called:
- We would rent out an entire bed and breakfast and have access to the entire facility.
- That includes a 1400 sq/ft deck that we can do WOD’s on
- A conference room for educational sessions
- Nutritional
- Programming
- Technique
- One major downfall to this location is the sleeping arrangements, they only have queen and king beds in the rooms (which is okay for couples like Vinny and Matt), but the rest of us are going to have to figure something out…
- It would probably go down some weekend in September (Friday and Saturday night for sure, Thursday night is an option too for those who are interested.)
- There would be anywhere from 20-30 spots available. (maybe more depending on the location)
- Breakfast would be included both days and the best part is we can supply them with a menu.
- They also have a fulltime cook on staff so if we want we can have all our meals prepared onsite. We just have to provide them a menu of what we want.
This particular location is 3 blocks from the Village and 4 blocks from the swimming area of the lake. It also backs right up against the National forest so there are about 15 hiking trails that start and end at their location.
Cost:
If we had 26 people interested it would be roughly $200-250. It would cover the cost of lodging and breakfast for both days. Lunch, dinner and snacks would be extra if decided to have their cook do all the cooking for us.
I am attaching a survey to gauge the general level of interest around the gym. If you have any specific questions or comments regarding this idea email me at matt@crossfitsouthbay.com.

A. Gymnastics Skill Work
*Work on L-Sits, front and back levers, skin the cat, muscle-ups or walking on your hands. You can also use this time to perform strict knees to elbows or practice ball ups or around the worlds. If you lack core strength use this time to develop a full range of motion ball up or knees to elbows.
B. 4 Rounds
3 min on 1 min off
20 Box Jump (24/20)
10 Wall Ball Burpee (20/16)
*Perform as many rounds as possible in four 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest between. “Burpee Wall Ball” is performed from the starting position of the regular wall ball with the ball loaded at the chest. Perform one wall ball. Upon receiving the ball on the way down, drop into a burpee while still holding the ball at the chest, perform a push-up touching the chest to the ball, and then MB clean the ball to the next rep.

I swear, one day I’m going to make it on a CFSB blog for something fitness related. Maybe after I break up with matt…
Matt, I’ll be your rebound when Vinny breaks up with you.
