Who: Anyone (not just CFSB members!)
What: This class starts with a story that describes the framework of the ancestral diet and how/why our modern diet is so detrimental. I cover nutrition basics, ‘paleo’ basics, goal-setting (fat loss, mass gain), meal planning, sport nutrition, and a little time on topics for specific populations we care about (metabolic syndrome, fertility, cancer, osteoporosis). You’ll learn all the why’s and wherefore’s on ancestral eating, the how-to’s, and get to ask any questions you have. It’s not all serious though: I cover nutrition myths, walk through a day in the life before and after paleo, and send you on your way with movies to watch, blogs to follow, and resources to learn even more. The geek-out level is probably low-to-medium where a high school student could easily follow and get a lot out of the seminar. I highly recommend bringing your loved ones and McDonalds-eating high school kids.
How: You can do either the 3-hour weekend seminar or the Nutrition On-ramp broken up into three 1-hour sessions. Nutrition 101 weekend seminars run about every month at CFSB (for other seminars see Remy’s site). Nutrition on-ramp runs between each CFSB On-ramp session (every third week).
When:
- Then next are Saturday Nov. 12th, 2011 and Saturday Dec. 3rd @ 1-3 p.m.
Cost: Individuals $25, Couples $40, Kids free - Learn more and sign up here
Still wondering? …
Does it seem strange to you that we need a seminar to learn and discuss how to nurture ourselves? Understanding nutrition and food from an ancestral and evolutionary lens helps explain this rather new phenomenon. Nutrition 101 helps understand how we ought to be eating for longevity and performance and why the opposite (the USDA food pyramid/the standard American diet) has gotten us to our present state.
Nutrition is the foundation that your sport & fitness are built upon. Your nutrition will amplify or diminish the effects of your training efforts. Modern diets are ill-suited for our genetic composition and under-serve our metabolic and performance needs. The rate of lifestyle-related disease and the cost to our collective quality of life is on the rise, filling our journey with unrewarding side-trips. You chose CrossFit as the most efficient form of training, so why would you fuel yourself with performance and quality of life-diminishing fuels? Because most don’t know any better. Here’s your chance to figure it out.
We’re well into the 21st century and now more than ever signs are pointing toward the eating in a ~250,000 BCE kind of way being about the only thing that might save our butts as a species. This ‘diet’ has come to be known as Paleo.
Quotes from participants:
“My experience taking Remy’s Nutrition 101 seminar was well worth the time spent. In most seminars you feel you leave with a lot of unanswered questions and unsure what resources to use. I learned about a lot of new websites and local resources that I was able to refer to right away. Her knowledge of what food is actually doing to you comes across in her passion for teaching us about this healthy lifestyle. I enjoyed all the science very much. I like the, ”were you paying attention?” quiz at the end with incentives like healthy fish oil if you answered correctly. A little too much interactive can sometimes slow the process down of getting that much material in a timely fashion, but her check in was great at the end, making sure we got it. It was very well covered.” – Lisa Austin, personal trainer
“Thank you for putting on such an information-packed class!! WOW! I was thrilled – especially with the depth of science and physiology you presented. I’ve been arguing with my Dad (who is a doctor) about his ridiculous diet myths he hangs onto (despite his diabetes and gout) and having the science now to back up my nagging is great!” – Dave F.
