Purpose

Purpose & Objectives

You probably know how true it is: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. In light of the expectations and responsibilities we pack into every day, it couldn’t be more true of nutrition. Perhaps you already know how to plan and cook, but life is presently not accommodating your nutritional needs. Or maybe you’re terrible at cooking healthy food and want to learn how to cook to support your CrossFit addiction. Or maybe you just want to live healthily and productively beyond age 50.

FitRat’s goal is to get everyone to want to learn and learn how to plan and make their weekly meals the most healthy and sustainable way. You chose CrossFit as the most efficient form of training. Why wouldn’t you choose the most efficient fuel?We hope you’ll find a way eventually to plan and cook your meals on your own, but hopefully these plans will help while you figure it out.

Fitness & Nutrition

CrossFit’s nutrition prescription aligns with a Paleo diet, and its proportions and portions align with the Zone diet. Beyond the science that supports the stellar nutritional profile of a Paleo diet reducing the risk of the most common preventable human diseases, and beyond the metabolic science behind the Zone diet, its athletes and experts have found it to work best for athletic performance. No matter what your age, job or your relationship with CrossFit, what you put in your body manifests itself on a daily basis and cumulatively as long as you’re alive.

We encourage you to gain an understanding of basic nutrition science, the state of nutrition in the US, and then compare the nutritional profiles of Paleo foods and Zone portions with the US Government’s myPyramid to better understand why by living paleo you’re making perhaps the best decision you’ll ever make.

We also encourage you to gain an understanding of why CrossFit endorses Zone eating for performance by reading through the CF Journal articles, here. For an excellent quick overview of the paleo lifestyle, check out this great video from King Crossfit, here. Also, check out our nutrition posts.

Beyond Efficiency

In addition to efficiency there is responsibility. These meals could be made using lower-priced ingredients such as factory-farmed animals that are grain- and antibiotic-fed and hormone-injected; using factory-farmed eggs and mega-aquaculture farmed fish, industrial-agriculture pesticide-laden mono-crop produce (all producing extreme environmental and public health hazards). They could be brought to you and made more quickly by using disposable plastic containers made probably in China from petroleum, shipped here using more petroleum. At this point in time in our country, the public health and environmental dollar-costs of the impact from producing such ingredients are not included in the price of these products. By choosing ingredients that don’t have anywhere near the negative impact, you’re doing more than just safeguarding your health, you are declining to participate in or endorse those activities. If you want to learn more about those issues, go here (link coming).

What’s FitRat?

“FitRat” is a fun name and attempt at branding. It refers to the CrossFitter in the context of modern society borrowing the ‘rat race’ metaphor. Each of us in pursuit of what we have decided we want out of life: we have to some extent chosen our own ‘maze’ in the world. You have sought out CrossFit for one of a few reasons which probably involve making the journey more enjoyable and improving your preparedness for your life or job as it depends on your fitness.

If time isn’t made to feed ourselves efficiently, negative results stack up reducing our fitness and the journey will become much less rewarding. Our very existence in a modern society places high demands on our time and resources; our jobs and families may place even greater demands on our time. CrossFit challenges you to manage your fitness efficiently, and that includes how you eat.
